Why can't Ford and GM switch their lines from one vehicle to another more rapidly?
I have heard that foreign car companies in the US are able to switch to a vehicle more suited to the market when necessary.
The conventional thinking is this: It would be a pretty radical investment to build tooling (for stamping especially), draw up plans, and give people training that you didn't intend to use. It's expensive.
Now - should they do it? Maybe so. You look at the price of gas as a disturbance to the market, for instance. It takes about 3 or 4 years to develop a vehicle. Gas went from $1.75 or so to $3.25 in one day in 2003, then dropped from $4.25 to $1.59 in the last 2 months. They can't change directions fast enough, not by a long shot.
